Foreign Affairs

This site generates a logo for Foreign Affairs magazine based on live data. The base logo, a customized version of Fit by DJR, has very thin verticals and thick horizontals—the opposite of how Latin letterforms are usually drawn, but evocative of the writing systems of Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, etc. The “live” version of the logo changes its height in response to the tone of the Foreign Affairs RSS feed by feeding it into a sentiment analysis API, with the greatest ratio of negative to positive language corresponding to the longest form of the logo. A user can also set the height manually. You can try it yourself below or here (not optimized for mobile).

Nota bene: The cover illustrations are by Dan Bejar, Kotryna Zukausaite, and David Plunkert.
